These systems come in two different varieties: heat pump and heat recovery. The heat pump system is better suited for open layouts. They are capable of heating and cooling – just not at the same time. However, the heat recovery version can do both at the same time. This is great if your building is broken up into smaller rooms. So your employees are warm in the winter, but your expensive server in the server room can still be cooled by the same system. VRF accomplishes this by moving heat from the server room to the offices, rather than by generating or removing heat.
